The Last Dive at Balboa park in San Diego in August 2026

The documentary film “The Last Dive” will hold its San Diego premiere on Wednesday, August 19, at the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego. Doors open at 6:00 p.m., with event programming beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Fourth Avenue venue.

Directed by Cody Sheehy and produced by Mark Monroe, Randy Gebhardt, and Christopher Gebhardt, the film follows Terry Kennedy, an American veteran and Baja California resident. The narrative documents Kennedy’s two-decade connection with an oceanic manta ray named Willy and his final journey to a remote island to reconnect with the animal.

The film won Best Cinematography in a Documentary Feature at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival and Best Documentary at both the Montreal International and Boise film festivals. It has been shown across more than 50 festival screenings worldwide and partnered with groups including Patagonia, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Surfrider Foundation.

The premiere event includes a red carpet arrival, a guided healing session led by Dr. Brian Alman, and the feature screening. Following the film, attendees will participate in a panel Q&A and a communal dance session led by Daybreaker.

Panellists for the post-screening discussion include director Cody Sheehy, film subject Terry Kennedy, Joel Reynolds of the NRDC, Serge Dedina of WILDCOAST, Nick Powers of WarFighter Scuba, Mark West of the Sierra Club San Diego Chapter, and manta researcher Jane Vinesky.

Supporting organizations for the San Diego screening include Patagonia, SSI, Mares, SeaTrees, Area 23A, RandomGood, and Ocean Enterprises Worldwide Dive Team. Ticket sales for the event are managed online through San Diego Theatres.
