The historic town of Mendocino has officially elected a new leader following a local voting process that concluded on July 5. Bodhi, a 120-pound Giant Alaskan Malamute, secured the mayoral seat by surpassing the required vote threshold. The final, deciding ballot was cast at the polling station in front of Harvest at Mendosa’s.
Bill Mahon, a retired pediatrician who has lived in Mendocino for 50 years, cast the 2,500th vote that officially put Bodhi over the top. The election has gained attention from various media organizations, including the Mendocino Voice and Newsweek.
A press conference will take place at the Mendocino Dog Park to thank local citizens and businesses for supporting the campaign. During the event, Bodhi is scheduled to introduce the members of his upcoming administration. Plans are currently underway to have a County Superior Court judge swear in the new mayor-elect.
The successful election served as the grand finale of a months-long fundraising initiative for the Mendocino Dog Park. Under the rules of the campaign, each dollar donated to the park counted as one vote for Bodhi. The canine candidate officially won the race once the fundraising total crossed the $2,500 mark.
Gwen Seymour, who co-founded the current configuration of the park with Scott Shepley, noted that $2,500 represents the annual cost to replace the specialized bark required to maintain the park grounds. Organizers have not yet determined if Bodhi will hold the mayoral position for life.
During his term, the canine mayor will promote adoption-first initiatives, shelter fundraisers, and foster family recruitment. His platform also focuses on working with schools, libraries, and seniors, alongside supporting local economic growth. Bodhi also recently participated in the local 4th of July Parade, where his campaign entry secured the medal for the best float.
The Mendocino Dog Park has operated at 998 School Street on the grounds of the Community Center of Mendocino since 2021. The facility features two separate fenced play areas designed to accommodate large dogs as well as smaller or more timid pets.
