The Rolling Stones have released their new 14-track studio album, titled Foreign Tongues, through Polydor and Universal Music. The new project follows less than three years after the release of the band’s Grammy Award-winning album, Hackney Diamonds.
The track listing contains 12 new original compositions alongside two covers. The band recorded a version of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” and closed the album with a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Beautiful Delilah.” The track list also features the singles “Jealous Lover” and “In the Stars,” as well as the opening blues track “Rough and Twisted,” which was previously distributed under the pseudonym The Cockroaches on limited-edition vinyl.
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood recorded the material in less than a month at Metropolis Studios in West London. The band reunited with producer Andrew Watt, who previously worked on their last studio album. Core musical contributions came from longtime collaborators Darryl Jones, Matt Clifford, and Steve Jordan.
The song “Hit Me In The Head” features a special appearance by the late Charlie Watts, utilizing audio captured during one of his final recording sessions before his death in 2021. The album also features a lineup of guest musicians, including Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Robert Smith of The Cure, and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Mick Jagger stated that the recording sessions in London were an intense few weeks where the band worked as quickly as possible. Keith Richards noted that the new album shares a continuity with Hackney Diamonds and benefited from the atmosphere of working in London. Ronnie Wood added that the band was on top form, frequently capturing the final songs on the first take.
The visual presentation for the album features cover artwork painted by American artist Nathaniel Mary Quinn. Quinn described the creation of the album cover for the band as an artistic honor.
