Italian composer Daniele Luppi has announced his upcoming album Wilma, a collection of compositions paying homage to vintage 1970s Italian film scores. The record is scheduled for release on October 9 through Verve and slowplay.
The project originated when Luppi gained access to a vintage library containing thousands of archived compositions recorded by Italian session musicians from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. The source material includes music originally written for obscure feature films, commercials, documentaries, short subjects, and industrial films.
Luppi edited the original archival tracks and combined them with contemporary instrumentation, live drum overdubs, modern synthesizer work using a 1984 Yamaha DX7, and mixing completed on a Lexicon PCM70. The album serves as the first entry in a planned experimental trilogy.
To accompany the album announcement, Luppi released the single “To Some Degree,” which features vocals from Mercury Prize-winning artist Michael Kiwanuka. “I was drawn to Michael Kiwanuka’s profound sense of humanity,” Luppi said regarding the collaboration. “It’s there in every lyric he sings and every performance he gives.”
The album also features vocal performance and songwriting contributions from artist Orion Sun, alongside lyrical work from Grammy-winning songwriter Shungudzo. The cover art for Wilma reproduces a publicity photo of actress Edith Scob taken by photographer Antonio Gálvez on the set of the 1969 Luis Buñuel film The Milky Way.
