ESPN, Lucasfilm, Disney and the NFL will present a real-time animated version of Super Bowl LXI set in the Star Wars galaxy. Star Wars Funday Football will air on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2027. It will be the first animated alternate telecast of a Super Bowl.
Characters from across the Lucasfilm franchise will join the action alongside the AFC and NFC champions. Original 1977 Star Wars cast member Anthony Daniels will return to voice C-3PO. The telecast will recreate every play in real time, turning players into animated avatars, with Star Wars characters subbing in during key moments and Easter eggs throughout.
The game is the fourth animated NFL alternate telecast from ESPN, Disney and the NFL. It follows Toy Story Funday Football in 2023, which earned three Sports Emmy Awards, The Simpsons Funday Football in 2024 and Monsters Funday Football in 2025. More details, including visual settings, commentators and characters, will be announced as the game approaches.
Star Wars Funday Football will stream live on Disney+ and the ESPN App and air on Disney Channel and Disney XD. It will run alongside the traditional telecast from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, with Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Lisa Salters and Laura Rutledge on ESPN, ABC and Disney+. The animated game will be available in more than 155 markets worldwide, including Canada, Australia, Japan and the Netherlands.
Fans can get a preview starting Tuesday, Oct. 20, when ESPN’s daily Disney+ show SC+ features Star Wars “Hyperspace Highlights” of Monday Night Football plays. Starting Oct. 26, an animated Darth Vader will interview an NFL player on Mondays. Other Super Bowl options include Super Bowl LXI with Peyton and Eli on ESPN2 and Super Bowl LXI Field Pass with The Pat McAfee Show on ESPNU.
ESPN will produce the telecast with Sony’s Beyond Sports technology, which has powered the Funday Football series since its start. It turns live gameplay into animation by combining the NFL’s Next Gen Stats player tracking with Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking. The telecast arrives as Lucasfilm celebrates 50 years of Star Wars, with a newly restored version of the original 1977 film returning to theaters Friday, Feb. 19.
