Discovery Channel to premiere new storm chasing docuseries in May

Discovery Channel will expand its weather-related programming with the debut of “In the Eye of the Storm: Chasers,” a new spinoff series set to premiere Sunday, May 17, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The six-part series follows 12 teams of professional storm chasers and certified weather spotters as they document close encounters with tornadoes across America’s Tornado Alley.
The series utilizes a self-shot format, where teams use their own camera rigs and weather technology without the presence of producers or traditional camera crews. The participants aim to spot tornadoes and provide warnings to people in the path of storms during what is described as one of the most active tornado seasons in decades.
The premiere episode features veteran chaser Reed Timmer and his armored vehicle, “the Dominator,” alongside a new generation of weather streamers. During a chase in Gary, South Dakota, the teams track a fast-moving twister that intensifies to EF-3 strength. According to the network, chasers Brandon Copic and Will Vollman are forced to pivot from their roles as spotters to first responders when the tornado strikes a farmhouse, launching a search-and-rescue mission while the storm is still in sight.
Later episodes will feature chaser Freddy McKinney capturing footage of a historic EF-5 tornado in Enderlin, North Dakota. The season also covers storm systems across Minnesota, Nebraska, and Canada. Featured veterans include Timmer, Copic, and Randy Hicks, who are joined by newer chasers such as Tanner Charles, Sarah Kassabian, and Connor Croff.
Produced by Arrow Media for Discovery Channel, the series focuses on the intersection of professional meteorology and the inherent risks of tracking destructive weather events. Viewers are encouraged to follow the series via social media using the hashtag #EyeoftheStormChasers for updates throughout the season.
