The Buffalo Bill Center of the West has announced the release of a special edition of a new book documenting the history and recovery of Yellowstone National Park’s bison herd. The publication, titled Yellowstone Bison: Return of the Last Wild Herd, explores the history, ecology, and current status of the herd within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
The book was written by Yellowstone National Park bison manager Chris Geremia and features photography by wildlife photographer Tom Murphy. The Center of the West’s special edition includes an exclusive prologue written by Arthur Middleton, Tucker Russell, and Kristin Barker of the Beyond Yellowstone Living Lab.
According to museum officials, the release of the publication aligns with the upcoming opening of Buffalo Nation, a major exhibition arriving at the Center in August 2026. The exhibition will examine the relationship between people and bison across North America through Indigenous perspectives, historical artifacts, and contemporary art.
Rebecca West, CEO and Executive Director of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, stated that the publication is timely and reflects many of the core themes featured in the upcoming exhibition. West noted that the work by Geremia and Murphy serves to deepen the public understanding of the animal’s enduring importance.
A portion of the proceeds from the book sales will directly support Yellowstone National Park’s Bison Conservation Transfer Program. The 244-page hardcover book is published by Yellowstone Forever and is currently available for purchase at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Points West Market.
