Ween will release Boognish Provides on October 16 through Rhino, featuring seven previously unreleased concerts recorded during the tour for Chocolate and Cheese. The collection will be available as a 14CD boxed set and as a 2LP vinyl edition containing 19 selected live tracks.
A 24-minute live version of “Vallejo,” recorded in February 1995 at The 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia, was released digitally today. Sound engineer Kirk Miller recalled that the performance ended with Mickey Melchiondo diving over the drum kit into Claude Coleman, after which both rolled down stairs into the dressing room and locked the door.
Originally released on September 27, 1994, Chocolate and Cheese marked a major shift for Gene Ween (Aaron Freeman) and Dean Ween (Mickey Melchiondo), transitioning them from four-track home recordings into a professional studio. The tour also marked the first time the duo toured with a full backing band, adding bassist Andrew Weiss and drummer Claude Coleman.
The boxed set includes complete shows from McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, California, The Metro in Chicago, Illinois, First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota, The 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia, Hof Ter Lo in Antwerp, Belgium, Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado, and Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Along with the music releases, new apparel, accessories, and an interactive 1980s-style text terminal experience called “The Altar of the Boognish” are being offered.
Across the seven concert recordings, the band performs 12 of the 16 tracks from Chocolate and Cheese, including multiple versions of “I Can’t Put My Finger On It,” “Take Me Away,” and “Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down).” Notable inclusions are a rare acoustic rendition of “Voodoo Lady” from Santa Monica and the live debut of “A Tear For Eddie” in Chicago.
The setlists also feature earlier material like “Fat Lenny” from GodWeenSatan: The Oneness, “Doctor Rock” from The Pod, and “Push Th’ Little Daisies” from Pure Guava. Additionally, the recordings capture early live performances of songs that would later be released on 12 Golden Country Greats, The Mollusk, and White Pepper.
