When Dutton Ranch started back in May, I didn’t know what to expect. I figured the show would be classic Yellowstone, dead bodies, hiding the evidence, dark family secrets, and somehow a ranch would be caught in the middle of it all. But don’t get me wrong, I was not expecting Beth and Rip to move all the way to Texas, buy a ranch, lose the cattle, and then both get jobs at a local operation only to learn how crooked the entire setup is from top to bottom.
But I still have so many burning questions after that finale. How did the cartel know exactly where Carter was? Did Oreana know about the plot to kidnap him all along? What happened to the cartel member who Rip captured alive? And did Rob Will really think he was actually going to take over the operation? Can Beth and Rip purchase 10 Petal ranch and finially give the ranch and the animals the life it deserves?
With Beth’s brother Kayce being a US Marshal, it makes you wonder if we will get a Marshals and Dutton Ranch crossover event. If they use the same broadcasting schedule next year, we could get a crossover where Kayce’s Marshals team helps find Carter at the end of Marshals season two, leading right into the beginning of Dutton Ranch. Remember, Dutton Ranch started May 15th and the Marshals season finale was May 24th, giving us two episodes of Beth and Kayce’s shows overlapping on the air.
The little details: Beth, Rip, and Carter’s evolution
I love the details that the show focuses on, especially Beth’s growth. Don’t get me wrong, Beth will still do anything to protect her family and land, but seeing her interact with animals is something new. I can’t picture season three of Yellowstone Beth feeding a baby cow or stepping up to save a horse. I also like how she is no longer driving luxury cars. Seeing her drive a truck over a Bentley shows how much she has changed since season one of Yellowstone. I do find it ironic that Beth did drive a Bentley in season five of Yellowstone, and it makes me wonder if using that specific car was a subtle sign of control related to Wes Bentley’s character. I also love seeing Beth protect herself. When she had the rifle pointed at Beulah in the season finale, we got a different version of “don’t screw with Beth.” As a regular Yellowstone watcher, she has often been the victim of assaults, so seeing her with a gun in her hand just makes me cheer louder for her knowing she is not going to take anyone’s crap.
As for Rip, what I love about him is that he is still wearing the classic Yellowstone jacket in every single episode. I love this detail as an ode to where he has been and what has molded his character. I also still love Rip’s internal radar for Beth. Being her protector and showing up right when Beth needs to be saved is just iconic for the show. I loved it in the finale when Beth was learning that the 10 Petal facility was just a cover-up and was not actually operational, and then Tommy confronts her only for Rip to come in and save the day. Their attitude at that moment was their way of saying “we are in this situation again.” Honestly, it made me fall in love with their characters even more.
I am still not sure what to think of Carter. He is at that age where he wants independence and life is confusing at nineteen, but quitting school was completely stupid on his part. I think he figured this out when the sheriff told him he needs a GED just to apply. Also, how did he even have access to Dwight’s house, and didn’t Dwight have family?
I can basically sum up the entire season finale as Beulah having one really bad day.
Season 2 wishes
I would like to see Jimmy and Teeter join the ranch. I have admit I do miss Jimmy’s charm. Or maybe Abby and Ryan stopping by because Abby has a tour spot near by.
Instead of a short 9-episode run, I would love to see a much fuller season of 15 or so episodes. If CBS is going to air Marshals during the regular TV season, they should run it from September through May, and then hand the baton over to Dutton Ranch to run from May all the way through September. Doing it this way would give us Yellowstone fans fresh, new episodes weekly all year round.
