The United States Postal Service will issue its ninth Hanukkah stamp, continuing a tradition of celebrating the eight-day Jewish holiday. The official dedication ceremony takes place on Tuesday, September 29, at 11 a.m. Central time at Touro Synagogue in New Orleans.
Postmaster General David Steiner will serve as the dedicating official for the first-day-of-issue event. While the ceremony is free to the public, individual registration is required for admission.
The release comes ahead of Hanukkah, which begins at sundown on Friday, December 4. Falling on the 25th day of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar, the holiday is traditionally celebrated with songs and foods like latkes and sufganiyot to mark the miracle of the oil.
Designed by USPS art director Antonio Alcala, the stamp features original artwork by illustrator Lisa Perrin. The graphic depicts a dark blue dreidel with rust-colored Hebrew letters against a turquoise background, surrounded by decorative floral patterns in shades of blue, orange, and cream.
The new issue will be available as a Forever stamp sold in panes of 20. Like all First-Class Mail Forever stamps, it will retain equal value to the current one-ounce postage rate.
