Los Angeles City Council member Ysabel Jurado introduced a resolution proclaiming October 4 as Anne Rice Day in the City of Los Angeles to commemorate the author’s birthday and the 50th anniversary of her novel Interview with the Vampire. The citywide recognition coincides with the return of Rare Books LA to Los Angeles Union Station on October 3 and October 4.

The book fair features an exhibition of vampire-related materials in the Ticket Concourse, including an 1819 edition of The Vampyre by John William Polidori, a first edition of Interview with the Vampire, and the black lace gothic dress Rice wore to book signings. A special 50th anniversary edition of the novel published by Alfred A. Knopf will be sold alongside a fundraiser ticket benefiting the Library Foundation of Los Angeles.

Programming includes a discussion featuring the author’s son, Christopher Rice, and her friend Eric Shaw Quinn. On Monday, October 5 at 7 p.m., Rice and Quinn will also join author Leigh Bardugo for a panel on the author’s legacy at a Vroman’s event held at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.

Rare Books LA runs at Union Station, located at 800 N. Alameda Street, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 4. Ahead of the fair, organizers partnered with the American Red Cross and the Mozaic at Union Station Apartments to host a blood drive on Friday, October 2, granting participants free weekend admission.

More than 50 international and domestic exhibitors are participating in the event, which is supported by AbeBooks. The transit-accessible venue serves passenger connections across Metrolink, Metro Rail, and Amtrak.
