Cyndi Lauper and Legacy Recordings have released a digital deluxe edition of her 1986 sophomore album, True Colors, to mark its 40th anniversary. A physical two-LP version in a rainbow sprinkle vinyl format is scheduled for release on December 4.
The digital collection features two unreleased studio recordings from the era: “The River Cried,” written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, and Lauper’s version of “Across the Universe.” The upcoming two-LP physical release will include “The River Cried” along with select live recordings from her 1987 show at Le Zénith in Paris.
Originally released on September 15, 1986, True Colors reached number four on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold over 7 million copies globally. The record earned two Grammy Award nominations, including Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the title track and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for “911.”
The album features guest appearances from several notable musicians, including Nile Rodgers on guitar for “Change of Heart,” Rick Derringer on “Calm Inside the Storm” and “The Faraway Nearby,” and Adrian Belew on “What’s Going On.” Backing vocalists across the project include The Bangles, Billy Joel, Ellie Greenwich, and Aimee Mann.
In addition to the album release, auction house Bonhams will host a fall sale featuring items from Lauper’s personal collection. The career-spanning auction will include costumes, fashion pieces, instruments, awards, and memorabilia, accompanied by a public exhibition in New York.
