The second season of the science fiction television series Dark Matter premiered Friday on Apple TV. The show is based on the novel of the same name, which marks the tenth anniversary of its publication this year.

In the first season, the story centered on Jason Dessen, played by Joel Edgerton, a physicist and professor living in Chicago. After being abducted into an alternate version of his life while walking home, Dessen was forced to navigate multiple alternate realities in an attempt to return to his original life.

The second season opens with Dessen and his family attempting to settle into a quiet life in a world that appears safe. That stability is interrupted when external forces compel them to flee once again.

As the season progresses, Jason becomes increasingly focused on the Box, while his wife Daniela, played by Jennifer Connelly, faces mounting paranoia that threatens their family life. Meanwhile, characters Amanda, played by Alice Braga, and Ryan, played by Jimmi Simpson, unite in an effort to return home.

Additional storylines follow Leighton, played by Dayo Okeniyi, who works toward building a world aligned with his personal vision. His efforts face opposition from Blair, played by Amanda Brugel, who is determined to intervene.
