An American bison calf and a kangaroo have formed a bond behind the scenes at Six Flags Great Adventure’s Wild Safari in Jackson, New Jersey. Two-month-old bison calf Gertie and Penny, a hand-raised kangaroo who is just over a year old, are currently residing near the park’s veterinary clinic.
The pair’s daily routine developed unexpectedly as they began spending time near one another. Animal care staff report that Penny can be found grooming Gertie on an almost daily basis.
“Animals have a way of surprising us, and the friendship between Penny and Gertie is certainly something special,” said Dr. William Rives, Director of Safari at Six Flags Great Adventure. Rives noted that it is unusual for two different species to form this type of connection, but the animals genuinely enjoy being together.
The relationship comes during a transitional stage for both young animals. Gertie continues to grow under the care of the safari staff, while Penny is preparing to move out onto the safari to join the rest of the park’s kangaroo population.
Six Flags Great Adventure’s Wild Safari spans 350 acres and houses more than 1,200 animals from around the world. Guests tour the wildlife preserve aboard off-road guided trucks to see species including giraffes, rhinos, elephants, bison, and kangaroos.
The interaction between the two young animals reflects the individualized attention provided by the safari’s animal care team. Staff members continue to watch over both animals as Penny prepares for her upcoming transition.
