Composer Justin Hurwitz has released a new arrangement of “Mia & Sebastian’s Theme” via Interscope Records to mark the tenth anniversary of La La Land. The updated piano piece offers a modified version of the film’s central theme designed for reflective listening.
The original soundtrack and score for La La Land have accumulated more than 3 billion streams on Spotify since releasing in 2016. The original recording of “Mia & Sebastian’s Theme” has earned over 300 million individual streams across platforms.
Where the original film version featured a fast jazz transition, the new recording presents a gentler structure. Hurwitz adjusted the arrangement to replace the dramatic ending with a softer conclusion that returns directly to the main melody.
“I’ve spent the last 10 years wishing we had recorded a version of ‘Mia & Sebastian’s Theme’ without the crazy jazz part for people who are in the mood to relax,” Hurwitz said. “It was exciting to go back into the studio and make this new version, which I hope people enjoy.”
The musical release coincides with anniversary events for the film, including a nationwide theatrical re-release in AMC Theatres. The film is also being presented internationally through the La La Land In Concert tour, which features live orchestral performances accompanying screen presentations in cities such as London, Tokyo, Mexico City, and San Francisco.
Hurwitz has earned two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, four Golden Globes, and a BAFTA for his film composition work. His previous scoring projects include Whiplash, First Man, and Babylon.
