More than 100 people gathered in downtown Fargo’s Broadway Square on July 29 for an attempt to break the world record for the most people playing tic-tac-toe simultaneously. The attempt fell short of the current record of 223 players, which was set in Singapore in 2016.

Organized in connection with TEDxFargo, the event moved into a tournament featuring Tic STACK Toe, a stacking variation on the classic game invented by retired local entrepreneur Ron Bergan. Earlier that day, Bergan presented on the TEDx stage at Brewhalla to demonstrate how to play the game.

The best-of-three tournament structure narrowed down to three finalists, consisting of one adult and a brother-and-sister pair. The top three finishers received game boards and gift cards to The Silver Lining Creamery, while all participants aged 14 and under were given a free game board.

Refreshments were provided by Drekker Brewing alongside free lemonade, snacks, and water for participants. A random drawing at the conclusion of the event awarded one attendee a 3D printer provided by LulzBot.

The tournament concluded at 7 p.m. and was followed by a free outdoor concert featuring classic rock cover band David Snyder and Green Light Night. Event organizers and volunteers from TEDxFargo and Emerging Prairie plan to host the world record attempt as an annual downtown event.
