Monty Python’s Fliegender Zirkus to receive global high-definition Blu-ray release

Two rare 1972 television episodes from the British comedy troupe Monty Python will be released globally in high definition on a deluxe Blu-ray SteelBook on June 5.
Distributed by Mercury Studios, the release of Monty Python’s Fliegender Zirkus (Monty Python’s Flying Circus) marks the first time the material has been made available on the Blu-ray format. The physical release features a restoration from the original source material by Jonathan Wood and includes packaging utilizing original artwork by troupe member Terry Gilliam, who also oversaw the project.
The two 45-minute episodes were originally produced by WDR for West German television and broadcast in January and December 1972. Shot entirely on film and primarily on location in Bavaria, the first episode was recorded by the group in the German language, while the second was recorded in English and dubbed into German.

The episodes feature performances from the full original lineup of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin, delivering classic sketches and songs such as “The Lumberjack Song” and “Silly Olympics.”
“These shows were a giant leap for Python silliness… all performed in a language none of us spoke,” Gilliam said. “Luckily, for me, I could draw in German.”
The upcoming release includes several archival bonus features, such as a 1971 performance of the group’s “Fish-Slapping Dance” from the German entertainment program Euroshow.
It also compiles Monty Python’s Montreux Special from 1971, a collection of sketches that has not been broadcast or released for nearly 30 years. The special features exclusive, alternate performances of well-known material, including “The Gascooker,” “Blackmail,” “The Ministry of Silly Walks,” and an exploding rendition of “The Blue Danube.”
Additional supplemental materials on the disc include a restoration demonstration alongside two production outtakes, titled “Mountain Stream” and “Swimming Lessons with Arthur Lustgarten.”
The release features a collectible SteelBook case with an accompanying C-card. Pre-orders for the set are currently available ahead of its June launch.
