Producers Right Angle Entertainment and Maple Tree Entertainment have announced The Carpenters Songbook: A Live Celebration, a new production set to launch its North American tour on September 23 at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York, Pennsylvania.
Following the opening performance in Pennsylvania, the tour will travel to Los Angeles, Boston, and more than 50 total cities across the United States and Canada. The concert experience is produced by the creative team behind The Simon & Garfunkel Story and features a full live band, vocals, and narration celebrating the music of Karen and Richard Carpenter.
Vocalist and actress Christina Hélène Braa stars in the production, performing Karen Carpenter’s catalog of hits. Music Director Kevin Lausche will perform moments from Richard Carpenter’s music career. Braa raised in San Francisco and holding a degree from the University of Southern California, shares a March 2 birthday and Connecticut birth state with Karen Carpenter. Lausche, making his national tour debut, earned a BFA from Wright State University.
The performance catalog includes songs such as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Close to You,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” “Superstar,” and “Top of the World.” Creator and director Dean Elliott noted that the goal of the production was to honor the duo’s artistry while bringing audiences together to experience the music live.
Starting November 27 in San Jose, most remaining tour stops will feature The Carpenters Songbook: At Christmas. This holiday variant pairs the duo’s greatest hits with holiday songs such as “Merry Christmas, Darling.”
The Carpenters sold more than 100 million records worldwide, establishing themselves as one of the major recording acts of the 1970s. The production has an approximate running time of two hours and 20 minutes, and tickets for the tour are currently on sale.
