Sumerian Comics has announced Janis Joplin: Pearl, a 128-page graphic novel celebrating the life and music of the late rock singer. The full-color hardcover edition is scheduled for release in October.
The graphic novel focuses on Joplin at the height of her career, tracing her path from her breakout in San Francisco to her solo work. The story covers her departure from Big Brother and the Holding Company, her live performances, and the recording of her album Pearl.
Written by Eric Gladstone, the book is illustrated by Marika Cresta, colored by Fares Maese, and lettered by Micah Myers. The oversized 7.25 by 11-inch hardcover includes bonus material such as a cover gallery and behind-the-scenes content.
Joplin emerged as a central figure in American music during the late 1960s, gaining recognition through performances at the Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock. Her recorded work includes songs such as “Piece of My Heart” and “Me and Bobby McGee.”
Joplin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Pre-orders for the upcoming graphic novel are available through online stores for Sumerian Comics and the official Janis Joplin website.
