Southwest Airlines Co. has partnered with FlightAware to introduce a tracking feature for its specialty aircraft, Independence One. The plane was unveiled earlier this year to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States.
A custom icon representing the aircraft will appear on the FlightAware website starting today through September 9, 2026. The digital icon features 13 stars to represent the nation’s original 13 colonies, matching a design element painted onto the physical airplane.
Company Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer Whitney Eichinger noted that the tracking tool is designed for both passengers and ground-based plane spotters. The initiative coincides with the peak of the summer travel season.
The airline is also introducing collectible items and airport events to mark the national milestone. Beginning July 1, company pilots will distribute an America Trio series of aircraft trading cards that feature the Independence One, Liberty One, and Freedom One planes.
Passengers can request these keepsake cards directly from flight crews when available. Additionally, the carrier will install festive decorations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport starting July 1 and participate in an event hosted by America250 in New York City on July 4.
