Sony Electronics has announced the FX5, a new full-frame camera joining its Cinema Line series. The camera features a newly developed fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor paired with a BIONZ XR2 image processing engine and a dedicated AI processing unit.
The FX5 introduces open gate 3:2 shooting and in-camera 16-bit RAW recording in Sony’s X-OCN format to the FX series. The camera captures 5K at up to 60 fps, 4K at up to 120 fps, and Full HD at up to 240 fps, featuring 15+ stops of dynamic range, three base ISO settings, and Dual Gain shooting.
Designed for handheld and mobile use, the camera body includes 5-axis optical in-body image stabilization, a 3.5-inch 4-axis multi-angle touch LCD monitor, and built-in mounting points that eliminate the need for a cage. It uses a high-capacity NP-SA100 battery, dual USB Type-C ports, and a high-efficiency cooling fan for long recording sessions.
The ILME-FX5B camera body will be available in mid-August for a suggested retail price of $4,899.99 USD. A bundle containing the ILME-FX5 and an XLR-H2 handle unit will be available at the same time for $5,499.99 USD.
Sony also announced optional accessories, including the DVF-EL1 detachable OLED viewfinder, the VMC-BNCU1 timecode adapter cable, and the XLR-H2 handle unit supporting 32-bit float audio. A planned firmware update set for 2027 will add vertical shooting interface options and higher resolution high-frame-rate shooting in X-OCN.
