North Dakota has launched its 2026 sunflower viewing season as fields reach peak bloom across the state’s prairie regions. Following a 2025 harvest of over 1 billion pounds of sunflowers across 500,000 acres, the annual bloom runs from late July through August.
The North Dakota Department of Commerce Tourism and Marketing Division has published an updated online Sunflower Map featuring 28 participating fields. The resource provides real-time bloom condition updates to help visitors plan drives and navigate to viewing locations.
As part of this year’s program, North Dakota Tourism is distributing complimentary samples of state-grown GIANTS sunflower seeds at select field sites. Designated viewing locations feature marked mailboxes where visitors can collect sample packages during their stops.
The seasonal tourism initiative highlights regional food products manufactured from the state’s sunflower crop. Local processing facilities produce items including Fargo-made SunButter spread and Wahpeton-produced GIANTS seeds and JC’s Smoked Spitz.
The tourism campaign encourages visitors to combine field viewing with stops at regional historic sites and state parks, including Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and the International Peace Garden. In conjunction with the season, the state will observe National Sunflower Day on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
