Nikon ZR full frame cinema camera update will add new H265 log recording features

Nikon Inc. has announced the development of firmware version 2.00 for the Nikon ZR, a full-frame sensor camera in the Z CINEMA series originally released in October 2025. The planned software update aims to advance creative capabilities and workflows for video creators and filmmakers.

The upcoming firmware version 2.00 will introduce support for Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB when recording in H.265 format. This addition is designed to deliver smaller file sizes while maintaining color-grading latitude.

Users will also gain a new selection option for High ISO NR levels during H.265 Log recording to better tailor image rendering. Additionally, the update adds focus peaking display support while recording in the R3D NE format for precise focus confirmation.

Firmware version 2.00 is scheduled for release in 2026. RED is also updating its remote-control applications, RED CONTROL and RED CONTROL PRO, to support remote control capabilities for the ZR camera.

Nikon is also developing future firmware intended to add open gate recording and a desqueeze display for anamorphic lenses. The company aims to incorporate those requested features into a subsequent ZR firmware update in 2027.
