Massachusetts Maritime Academy has entered an agreement with New Balance Athletics, Inc. and Clean Harbors to build a new campus fitness facility. The upcoming 18,000-square-foot building will be named the New Balance Wellness Center at the Clean Harbors Athletic Facility.
The $30 million project will be located next to and connected with the academy’s main gymnasium in Buzzards Bay. The facility recently received final approval from the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance following a completed feasibility study.
The state agency is currently working alongside the academy to select a designer for the facility. The formal study and design phases will continue through 2027, with construction scheduled to take about 18 months. Final completion of the facility is expected in the fall of 2029.
The capital project also expands on existing athletic facilities to support physical health and training. Jim Davis, chairman of Boston-based New Balance, noted the project will offer athletic opportunities that complement the academic programs. Alan S. McKim, founder and former chief executive officer of Norwell-based Clean Harbors, stated the space is intended to foster physical health, resilience, and teamwork.
According to Academy President Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, the new center aims to help cadets establish long-term health habits. In addition to the construction funding, the corporate agreement establishes an annual $5,000 scholarship. Beginning in the fall of 2027, the scholarship will be available to the child of a New Balance associate who attends the academy.
