HBO Max has renewed the original comedy series “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” for a second season. The show from Warner Bros. Television stands as the platform’s second-biggest comedy series launch globally.
Created, written, and executive produced by Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, the series debuted its first season in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. Following its release, the production earned a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critical reception for the debut season included reviews from Slate, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, CBR, TVLine, and TheWrap. Outlets highlighted the show for its comedic direction and narrative ambition within the television landscape.
Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming and head of HBO and HBO Max comedy series, expressed satisfaction with how the show connected with existing followers of “The Big Bang Theory” and new viewers. She added that the network looks forward to seeing what the creative team conjures for the characters in the upcoming season.
Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks, stated that the creators delivered an original take on the franchise that captured the essence of the original series. Dungey noted that seeing audiences embrace the show has been rewarding and confirmed plans to continue exploring the storyline in season two.
The initial season centers on comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, who is tasked with restoring reality after breaking a device built by Sheldon and Leonard that causes a multiverse crisis. Bloom attempts to resolve the situation with help from his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist Barry Kripke, encountering alternate-universe characters from “The Big Bang Theory” along the way.
The core cast features Kevin Sussman as Stuart, Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert, and John Ross Bowie as Kripke. The series is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with Kyle Newacheck serving as executive producer and directing multiple episodes.
