Musical theater performer Lissa deGuzman will join the Broadway company of Chicago in the role of Velma Kelly starting Monday, August 31. She will take over the stage at the Ambassador Theatre, located at 219 West 49th Street.
The incoming cast member previously played Elphaba in Wicked and Princess Jasmine in Aladdin on Broadway, having also appeared in the national touring companies for both shows. She made her Broadway debut as the alternate for Ann Darrow in King Kong and recently played Cassie in A Chorus Line with Theatre Group Asia.
The current production of Chicago features Krysta Rodriguez as Roxie Hart, Sophie Carmen-Jones as Velma Kelly, Jacqueline B. Arnold as Matron “Mama” Morton, Eddie Cooper as Amos Hart, and J. Workman as Mary Sunshine. Mark Ballas currently stars as Billy Flynn, with his run scheduled through Sunday, August 16.
The show holds the record as the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Written by Fred Ebb, Bob Fosse, and John Kander, the production is directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinking.
Set in the 1920s, the story centers on nightclub dancer Roxie Hart, who hires a high-profile criminal lawyer to evade conviction after killing her lover. The production won six Tony Awards in 1997, including Best Musical Revival, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording.
Performances are held weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Tickets are currently available at the Ambassador Theatre box office and through the show’s official website.
