Seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist John Mayer has released his new single “Tom and Jerry,” his first solo release since the 2021 album Sob Rock. The song is out now through Sob Rock Records and Mercury Records. It premiered Thursday on Mayer’s SiriusXM channel, LIFE with John Mayer.

Blake Slatkin and Mayer produced the single, which was mixed by Serban Ghenea and recorded at Chaplin Studios. A live vocal video for “Tom and Jerry” debuted Friday at noon ET.

Mayer said the title came from the first voice memo he saved with the song idea. “‘Tom and Jerry’ was the name I used when saving my first voice memo with this song idea,” he said.

The single arrives alongside news that Mayer is launching his own record label, Sob Rock Records, in partnership with Mercury Records. The partnership adds Mayer to Mercury’s roster of artists.

A Bridgeport, Connecticut, native, Mayer introduced himself with the quintuple-platinum album Room for Squares in 2001. He has earned three No. 1 debuts on the Billboard 200 with Heavier Things, Battle Studies and Born and Raised. He has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and won seven Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year for “Daughters.”

Mayer has also played lead guitar and sung with Dead & Company since the band formed in 2015. The group’s 48-show residency at Sphere in Las Vegas drew nearly half a million attendees, and the band has raised more than $15 million for nonprofits and environmental and social causes. Sob Rock, his eighth studio album, featured the songs “Last Train Home” and “Wild Blue” and has been certified gold. In November 2023, he launched LIFE with John Mayer, a 24/7 SiriusXM channel that he curates and hosts.
