HBO has officially ordered The Trial of Louise Woodward, a five-episode limited series based on true events. Production on the drama is scheduled to begin this August, with an expected release in 2027.
The series stars two-time Emmy nominee Meghann Fahy in the title role. Created, written, and executive produced by Matthew Barry, the project is directed by Academy and Emmy Award winner Susanne Bier, who will direct all five episodes.
The story centers on the 1997 trial of an 18-year-old British au pair accused of shaking a baby to death while under the care of her American host family. The court case gained international media attention as it played out across both British and American television.
Showrunner Matthew Barry noted that the trial raised major questions surrounding childcare, working mothers, and the emergence of round-the-clock news media. Francesca Orsi, head of HBO Drama Series and Films, highlighted the creative team behind the project and welcomed Fahy back to the network.
The executive production team includes Bier, Barry, Big Light Productions founder Frank Spotnitz, Emily Feller, Tobi de Graaff, Antoine Douaihy, and Anton TV.
