The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is offering seasonal steam train trips through the autumn foliage of Colorado and New Mexico. The 64-mile route travels across the Rocky Mountains between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado.
The historic railroad climbs from an elevation of 7,800 feet to Cumbres Pass at 10,015 feet. Because of the elevation changes along the route, the surrounding aspen trees change color at different times, creating an evolving display of gold, amber, and orange across the landscape.
Jointly owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico, the narrow-gauge steam railroad is a designated National Historic Landmark. The train crosses the state border 11 times, traveling through tunnels, across trestles, and alongside landmarks such as Toltec Gorge.
Passengers can choose from several seating options, including historic coaches, Deluxe cars, Parlor cars, and an open-air gondola car. Full-day excursions include a hot lunch stop at Osier Station, with half-day and specialty options also available on the schedule.
Peak fall color along the route typically occurs from mid-September through early October, depending on weather and elevation. Advance reservations are recommended for autumn departures, as seasonal train rides frequently sell out.
