Los Angeles-based alternative four-piece rock group wilt has announced their debut album, when no one’s watching, set for release on October 2 via AWAL. The band, made up of vocalist Chelsea Rifkin, guitarist Aaron Liebman, guitarist Andy Vance, and drummer Dan Bermudez, paired the announcement with the release of a new single and music video titled “dent.”
The upcoming record was produced by Grammy winner Carlos de la Garza, known for his work with Paramore and The Linda Lindas. The album features a sound driven by loud-quiet-loud dynamics, inventive guitar riffs, and vocals drawing from grunge, shoegaze, punk, and melodic hardcore.
The new single, “dent,” serves as an unusual entry point for the project, featuring a time signature change and a heavy outro. According to the band, the track acts as a sonic thesis statement for the full-length project, which follows earlier single releases “nothing good to cry about” and “bundy.”
An accompanying music video for “dent,” directed by Ambar Navarro, features a retro-futurist setting filmed inside a storage container during a July heatwave in Los Angeles. Vocalist Chelsea Rifkin hand-made and upcycled the clothing and accessories worn in the video.
The album marks a change in process for the group, who wrote the material collaboratively in one room rather than passing individual demos back and forth. Band members noted that the album title reflects personal struggles with mental health, emotional stress, and self-doubt that persist even as their career advances.
Rifkin’s late father heavily influenced the record’s thematic direction and sound, having exposed her to Los Angeles punk and rock music through the record store her parents owned during her childhood. The album release coincides with an extensive North American tour featuring both headline and support dates.
