Interactive video art series to light up Dumbo’s iconic infrastructure

Team Dumbo has announced the seventh installment of the Dumbo Projection Project, an expansive outdoor video art exhibition that will transform the neighborhood’s industrial landscape throughout May.
The series, viewable Wednesdays through Sundays from May 1 to 31, features large-scale digital works projected onto the Manhattan Bridge and the BQE wall in Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Steward Park. This year’s theme, ‘Dumbo: Past, Present & Future,’ marks a significant evolution for the project by making all featured works interactive. Viewers can engage with the art using their smartphones as flashlights or controllers to reveal hidden narratives and games.
Presented by the Dumbo Business Improvement District in collaboration with the NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program, the exhibition features four primary works. These include ‘Behind the Bricks,’ which allows participants to virtually “peel back” neighborhood walls, and ‘SubWave,’ a piece that synchronizes visual waves with the sound of passing subway trains to explore the East River’s history.
“It’s been fascinating to see our V7 artists create work that responds to and plays with Dumbo’s iconic spaces,” said Clara Schuhmacher, senior vice president of the Dumbo Business Improvement District. The project is supported by NYC DOT Art and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, with projections running daily from dusk until 11 p.m.
