99 Ranch Market has released its first cookbook, Did You Eat Yet?, written by CEO Alice Chen. The book is available now as an e-book on Apple Books, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble. Printed hardcover copies will follow later this fall.
The book has 88 recipes spanning Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese, Southeast Asian, and other cuisines. It also includes personal stories from 99 Ranch team members. The title comes from the way many Asian families say “I love you” by asking whether someone has eaten.
Chapters include a pantry guide to specialty ingredients such as cooking wines, vinegars, rice, aromatics, and sauces. Others cover breakfast dishes, appetizers, rice dishes, noodles, proteins, vegetables, soups and desserts. Chapter titles include “Eat Before You Go,” “Finish Every Grain” and “Not Too Sweet.”
The recipes range from 10-minute weeknight meals to more involved dishes for gatherings. Chen said the recipes are deeply personal to her. She said many parents and grandparents show love by making favorite dishes or asking whether someone has eaten, and that she hopes the book helps families create those moments at their own tables.
99 Ranch Market, based in Buena Park, California, describes itself as the nation’s leading Pan-Asian grocery store chain. Customers have shopped there for more than four decades, and Chen said many, like her, grew up with the company and now shop for their own families.
