A recent survey conducted by the Wounded Warrior Project reveals that one in four wounded veterans requires a caregiver. The data indicates that a majority of these veterans and their support systems report having insufficient assistance. Many individuals find themselves stepping into caregiving roles unexpectedly due to sudden medical crises.

According to the data, 80% of veterans who utilize a caregiver require an average of nine hours of care per day, six days a week. The responsibilities often limit the careers and social connections of those providing the care. The survey shows that caregivers most commonly assist with mental health needs at 77.2%, followed by mobility at 32.7%, dressing at 27%, and grooming at 25.2%.

In response to these findings, the Wounded Warrior Project operates its Independence Program. The initiative connects severely wounded veterans and their families to customized services within their local communities. The organization works with the entire household, providing mental health resources, connection events, and respite services directly to caregivers.

Lyndsey Hawk, whose husband Dustin collapsed during an Army fitness test, became his primary caregiver following weeks of hospitalization. A Department of Veterans Affairs social worker referred the family to the non-profit organization. Through the program, Hawk established a national support network to help manage the ongoing demands of her role.

Kelly Parker, director of Independence Services for the organization, stated that providing caregivers with resources and community helps them remain effective support systems for veterans. The organization focuses its programs, advocacy, and awareness efforts on the total well-being of veterans, active-duty service members, and their families.
