The Tom Petty Estate has announced a comprehensive box set titled Origins 1971-1978 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Scheduled for release on November 6 through UMe, the collection explores the band’s sonic development during the 1970s and includes collaborations with artists such as Al Kooper, Leon Russell, Jim Gordon, and Emory Gordy.
The announcement comes alongside a reunion of original Heartbreakers members Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, and Ron Blair at the Americana Awards. The band members are set to open the ceremony with a performance alongside Chris Stapleton and receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
To preview the set, an unreleased 1978 track titled Parade of Loons has been released along with an animated music video directed by Peter Sluszka. The video stars actor Iain Armitage, known for his role in Young Sheldon.
The Origins 1971-1978 collection will be available in 5LP, 4CD, and deluxe configurations, each including a Blu-ray audio disc and a DVD. The centerpiece of the set is No Sleep Til L.A., an album featuring 12 tracks that document the band’s progression from early recordings in Gainesville to sessions in Tulsa and Los Angeles.
The box set contains newly mixed and remastered 50th-anniversary editions of the band’s first two studio albums, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and You’re Gonna Get It!, engineered by Ryan Ulyate. It also features a full 1977 live recording from the Record Plant in Sausalito, rare solo tracks in a collection titled The Cut Out Bin, and a 1978 live performance on the BBC television show The Old Grey Whistle Test.
