Canadian alt-rock pioneers The Pursuit of Happiness are set to release the first-ever vinyl edition of their retrospective compilation, When We Ruled: The Best of The Pursuit of Happiness, on Sept. 18. The 21-track collection spans the band’s career and features original hit singles, rare tracks, and two new recordings.

Pressed on 2LP 180g vinyl, the package includes gatefold design and two inner sleeves with band notes and photographs. Audio for the release was newly mastered, and pre-orders are currently open.

The compilation draws from five of the group’s studio albums released between 1988 and 1997, including “Love Junk,” “One Sided Story,” “The Downward Road,” “Where’s the Bone?,” and “The Wonderful World of The Pursuit of Happiness.” Track ordering follows the band’s progression from late-1980s pop-rock anthems to introspective 1990s material, ending with the original recording of “I’m an Adult Now.”

Formed in Toronto in 1985 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Moe Berg, the group first gained attention with an independent 12-inch release of “I’m an Adult Now” in 1986. A low-budget music video secured airplay on MuchMusic and CITY-TV, resulting in Juno Award nominations for Most Promising Group and Best Video in 1987.

After releasing “Killed By Love” in 1988, the band signed with Chrysalis Records and released their Todd Rundgren-produced debut album, “Love Junk.” A re-recorded version of “I’m an Adult Now” topped Canada’s RPM singles chart, leading to platinum album certification in Canada and chart entries on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

The band followed with “One-Sided Story” in 1990, which earned gold status in Canada. They later moved to Mercury Records for 1993’s “The Downward Road,” before releasing “Where’s the Bone?” in 1995 and “The Wonderful World of The Pursuit of Happiness” in 1996 through Iron Music.

The Pursuit of Happiness remains active and touring today. The line-up includes founding members Moe Berg and Dave Gilby alongside Kris Abbott, Brad Barker, and Renee Suchy.
