Rhino has expanded its Quadio physical audio series with four new quadraphonic releases featuring music from the 1970s. The batch includes Herbie Mann’s Hold On, I’m Coming, David Gates’ First/Never Let Her Go, James Gang’s Miami, and James Taylor’s Gorilla.
All four titles are available on Blu-ray exclusively through the Rhino website and select Warner Music Group stores. Each disc contains the original quadraphonic mix alongside a high-resolution 192 kHz/24-bit stereo transfer sourced from analog master tapes, with the Herbie Mann quad mix sourced from a commercial reel.
The Herbie Mann release captures live concert recordings from Yankee Stadium and the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1973. The album features R&B grooves and covers of tracks such as “Respect Yourself” and “(Gimme Some Of That Good Old) Soul Beat Momma.”
David Gates’ release combines his first two post-Bread solo albums onto a single disc. The collection includes tracks like “Soap (I Use The),” “Suite: Clouds, Rain,” “Playin’ On My Guitar,” and the title track “Never Let Her Go.”
James Gang’s 1974 release Miami features guitar work by Tommy Bolin and production by Tom Dowd. James Taylor’s 1975 album Gorilla includes guest appearances by David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Lowell George, featuring songs such as “Mexico” and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You).”
