Apple Corps Ltd., Capitol, and UMe have released “Day Tripper (Songwriting Work Tape),” a rare home recording that captures John Lennon and Paul McCartney developing the song before its signature guitar riff was composed. The audio segment is taken from the forthcoming expanded special edition of Rubber Soul, which is scheduled for release on October 2.
Recorded at Lennon’s Kenwood home in Weybridge, Surrey, the tape captures the songwriting duo working through early ideas initially based on a folk song Lennon wrote the previous month. The home recording features the pair laughing and working through lyrics and composition before the track was officially completed in an eight-hour studio session.
The newly released tape serves as a preview for the upcoming Rubber Soul Special Edition, which was mixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell. The expanded box set includes 24 early session recordings, 20 previously unreleased takes, three home demos, new stereo and mono mixes, and the original U.S. Capitol album version.
Originally released on December 3, 1965, Rubber Soul marked an artistic shift for the band as they moved toward more complex recording techniques and musical arrangements. The expanded box set collects work from both the main album sessions and the standalone double A-side single release of “Day Tripper” and “We Can Work It Out.”
The “Day Tripper (Songwriting Work Tape)” track is available on the super deluxe and deluxe versions of the reissue, which will be sold across LP, CD, and Blu-ray formats. The release comes alongside other recent band announcements, including a planned fan experience site at 3 Savile Row in 2027 and a multi-part theatrical film project directed by Sam Mendes set for 2028.
