New HGTV series House Shock brings secret home renovations to homeowners this September

Host Arielle Vandenberg and contractor Steven Lewis, as seen on House Shock, Season 1.

HGTV will premiere House Shock, a new covert renovation series hosted by designer Arielle Vandenberg and contractor Steve Lewis, on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The one-hour series features surprise room makeovers arranged by family members, friends, and coworkers of unsuspecting homeowners.

Throughout the season, the design and construction team will secretly remodel various residential spaces, including primary bedrooms, home offices, kitchens, living rooms, and three-season spaces. Nominating family members provide design inspiration to help guide the rapid transformations.

Vandenberg collaborates with Lewis, a former Battle on the Beach winner, to complete each project on a tight multi-day timeline. To keep homeowners from discovering the ongoing work, the team coordinates cover stories and distractions with neighbors and colleagues.

The production process requires the build crew to work under strict time constraints while managing typical construction hurdles. Challenges faced during the fast-paced builds include hidden structural issues, delivery delays, weather disruptions, and avoiding home security cameras.

Each episode finishes with a reveal where the recipient returns home to learn about the hidden operation and view the completed space. House Shock begins its broadcast run on HGTV in late September.
