Marine Corps veteran Minnie Whitzel recently received a comprehensive home renovation through a surprise initiative organized by community members and volunteers. Whitzel, who served in the military for 31 years and founded VFW Post 12235, had spent decades coordinating support services for other veterans before experiencing difficult personal circumstances.
The renovation was organized as part of a special America 250 episode of the television series Moving With The Military. Prior to the community intervention, Whitzel was residing in a house that required major structural repairs and was sleeping on an air mattress.
Dozens of local volunteers, businesses, and residents worked over a multi-day period to complete a series of interior and exterior upgrades to the property. The construction crews finalized extensive landscaping, drainage improvements, plumbing repairs, painting, and lighting upgrades throughout the residence.
The workers also installed new doors, fully furnished the primary living spaces, and completely refreshed the laundry room. Show hosts Maria and Patrick Reed noted that the project served to highlight the core concepts of service, sacrifice, and citizenship that define the nation.
Title sponsor Newrez, a mortgage lender and corporate partner of the television program, provided the primary financial and resource backing for the project. The company has participated in more than 50 veteran home makeovers over seven consecutive seasons.
The television project concluded with a formal reveal ceremony when Whitzel returned to the property to view the finished construction. Organizers stated that the community effort was designed to provide lasting comfort, dignity, and independence to the veteran.
