The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Traumatic Brain Injury Program Reauthorization Act, known as H.R. 1493. The bipartisan legislation reauthorizes and updates federal programs supporting individuals living with traumatic brain injuries.
The bill was introduced by Representative Frank Pallone of New Jersey. It extends funding through fiscal year 2030 for federal grants that assist states, Tribal communities, and advocacy organizations with rehabilitation and community services.
Data from the Defense Health Agency shows more than 530,000 first-time traumatic brain injury diagnoses among service members between 2000 and late 2025. Research indicates about one in four hospitalized service members and veterans with a brain injury may develop a long-term disability.
The legislation mandates expanded data collection regarding causes, risk factors, treatments, and long-term outcomes associated with brain injuries. It also directs the Department of Health and Human Services to study chronic conditions following head injuries and submit findings to Congress.
Wounded Warrior Project publicly commended the House for passing the measure. Following its approval in the House, the bill moves to the Senate for further consideration.
