Four Roses Distillery has announced the launch of its new Experimental Series, a limited-edition collection that departs from the brand’s traditional 10-recipe framework. The debut represents a significant period of innovation in the company’s 138-year history. The project allows the distillery to test new finishing techniques while maintaining its core bourbon identity.
The inaugural release, Experimental Series No. 001, is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey finished in rare Japanese Mizunara oak barrels. The production team monitored the barrels closely throughout the finishing process, pulling samples almost weekly to track maturation. The team analyzed each barrel individually to determine the precise balance point before blending the final liquid.
Master Distiller Brent Elliott developed the expression through extensive trials across multiple recipes, yeast strains, barrel specifications, and toast and char combinations. Elliott ultimately selected a six-year-old OBSK recipe for the project. The specific recipe was chosen for its ability to complement the layered spice characteristics of the Mizunara oak.
The bottle packaging incorporates design elements that reference the company’s physical history. The shape of the front label draws inspiration from the Spanish Mission-style architecture of the distillery facility in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The reverse label features imagery of one of the brand’s historic single-story rickhouses to highlight the role of the maturation process.
The new product is bottled in a 375ml format and will carry a suggested retail price of 55 dollars per bottle. It will be available for public purchase at the Four Roses Distillery Visitor Center beginning July 30. The brand maintains distilling operations in Lawrenceburg and warehousing facilities in Cox’s Creek, Kentucky.
