The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Vermont has partnered with The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize to launch Women+ on the Edge of Democracy. The civic and cultural initiative has commissioned 36 women+ playwrights to write ten-minute plays or monologues addressing the current state of American democracy.
Commissioned writers for the project include Lynn Nottage, Sarah Ruhl, Heidi Schreck, Beth Henley, Lauren M. Gunderson, and Dael Orlandersmith. The dramaturgy team includes Martine Kei Green-Rogers, Sarah Mantell, Amrita Ramanan, Zeina Salame, and Jenny Worton.
All commissioned works will premiere together in a live marathon performance at the Flynn in Burlington, Vermont, in October 2026. Specific show dates, showtimes, and ticket details will be announced by the venue at a later time.
Following the premiere, the Flynn will publish the complete collection of plays as an anthology in September. Rights will be waived for individuals and non-profit organizations presenting free public readings or performances between October 23 and November 3, 2026.
