The Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame has partnered with the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music to launch a new historical music exhibit. The upcoming installation, titled “Chimes of Freedom: Patriotism, Protest, and the Power of Song,” explores how American musicians have historically used song as an agent for social and political change. Public tours for the installation are scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 12th, with tickets available through the museum website.
The physical display will feature historical artifacts and musical items from prominent American artists, including Bruce Springsteen, John Denver, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, and the Dropkick Murphys. The curation traces how different eras adapted musical traditions to address social issues, mapping a lineage from early Indigenous music and Revolutionary War tunes to civil rights anthems and modern calls for social justice.
This collaborative project runs concurrently with a sister exhibit under the same name that launched at the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music earlier this June. While both locations share a unified theme regarding the impact of music on historical movements, each site features completely unique artifacts. The dual-city museum partnership is scheduled to remain open to the public through February 2027.
The hosting institution operates as a cultural and educational branch of the Boch Center, located inside the Wang Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. The venue is currently celebrating its 100th anniversary of operations this year. The final artifact layout was organized by the Museum Collective to preserve American music legacies while offering educational experiences covering diverse regional and cultural backgrounds.
The new exhibit joins a rotating lineup of recent and current programming hosted at the historical Boston facility. Previous and ongoing installations at the venue include dedicated showcases for Levon Helm, Joan Baez, and Blue Note Records photographer Francis Wolff. Visitors can access the new collection alongside existing exhibits dedicated to the broader legends of folk, Americana, and roots music genres.
