GEA Live, Disney Concerts, and director Baz Luhrmann announced the global tour schedule for William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert. The live-to-film event marks the 30th anniversary of the 1996 movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
The production makes its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House on September 29. The official tour begins on January 9 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, before traveling across three continents.
Presales for the tour opened on September 15. General public ticket sales begin on September 18 at 10 a.m. local time.
The film screens with its original dialogue and action while a live ensemble performs the musical score in synchronization with the footage. The performance group combines rock and orchestral musicians with vocalists, electronics, and a DJ.
Luhrmann expressed that watching the film reach new viewers over the past three decades remains a highlight of his career. GEA Live producer Floris Douwes noted that the live concept aims to honor the movie’s history while providing a new experience for audiences.
Originally released on November 1, 1996, William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet debuted at the top spot at the domestic box office. The soundtrack features songs such as “Kissing You” by Des’ree, “Lovefool” by The Cardigans, “Talk Show Host” by Radiohead, “#1 Crush” by Garbage, “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)” by Quindon Tarver, “Young Hearts Run Free” by Kym Mazelle, and “You and Me Song” by The Wannadies.
