Chip and Joanna Gaines are taking on a 15,000-square-foot Waco estate in their new series, “Fixer Upper: Chip Bought a Mansion.” The couple has three months to transform the property, which Chip purchased three years ago. The series premieres Sunday, Dec. 27, on Magnolia Network and HGTV.
What began as an investment turned into a major project when the couple found the home needed far more work than expected. Joanna steps in to turn the outdated property into a home ready for its next chapter. The series follows setbacks, budget challenges, and the opportunities that come with renovating a house this size.
“Chip has always been a dreamer and risk taker, but even for him, buying a mansion was a bold move,” Joanna Gaines said. “What started as a surprise quickly turned into one of our most ambitious and unique renovations to date. It challenged us creatively and stretched our comfort zones, but my favorite part was that Chip and I really got to work side by side in order to get this massive house across the finish line and on the market.”
In the premiere, the couple hosts a pre-renovation open house to gather feedback from realtors and the community. Joanna turns to her designer friends for guidance as she shapes her vision. As work begins, Chip looks for creative ways to offset costs, including selling salvaged materials from the property, while Joanna balances the home’s character with her signature design style.
Later in the six-episode season, Joanna travels to East Texas to find unique pieces for the house, and Chip tries his hand at landscaping and styling. The couple then welcomes real estate professionals back for a final reveal to see whether the project was worth the risk.

“Fixer Upper: Chip Bought a Mansion” premieres with back-to-back episodes at 9 and 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on Dec. 27. Each new episode streams on HBO Max the next day, beginning Monday, Dec. 28. The series is produced by Blind Nil.
