Sesame Place San Diego renews Certified Autism Center designation

Sesame Place San Diego has renewed its Certified Autism Center designation for a second time. The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, known as IBCCES, grants the designation to organizations that meet its training and certification requirements.

The park was the first theme park on the West Coast to open as a Certified Autism Center, in 2022. For this renewal, at least 80% of its front-facing staff completed updated autism and sensory training.

The park offers several accommodations for autistic and sensory-sensitive guests:

  • Quiet rooms and low-sensory rooms
  • Ride accessibility programs
  • Sensory guides for rides, attractions and shows
  • Noise-canceling headphones for single-day use
  • Low-sensory parade viewing and dining options
  • Family care centers and adult changing tables

Park President Tyler Carter thanked IBCCES for its continued recognition and said the park wants every guest to feel welcome and accommodated. Myron Pincomb, IBCCES chief executive officer and board chairman, said the park has kept up its staff training and accessibility efforts since 2022.

The park is also listed on the IBCCES Accessibility App, which is free to download and gives real-time guidance on certified destinations and sensory-inclusive spaces. IBCCES has provided autism, sensory and neurodiversity training and certification for 25 years.
