Original interior comic book art from the 1971 Amazing Spider-Man #96 and #97 issues is available at auction on ComicConnect through October 4. The offering marks the first time pages from the historic drug-themed storyline have entered the auction market.
The artwork features interior pages created by comic artists John Romita Sr., Gil Kane, Frank Giacoia, and Mike Esposito. Illustrating Peter Parker and his friend Harry Osborn, the pages display Parker dealing with personal struggles alongside scenes depicting the impacts of drug addiction.
The three-issue storyline was originally conceived by Marvel’s Stan Lee following a request from the Nixon administration to produce a story warning youth about drug abuse. Marvel published the issues without the Comics Code Authority seal after the organization refused approval due to strict guidelines banning any depiction of drug use.
Following the success of the issues, the Comics Code Authority relaxed its content restrictions across the industry before eventually being discontinued in 2011. The current auction allows collectors to bid on the original line art pages that helped prompt the regulatory shift.
Bidding for the collection is hosted online by pop culture auction house ComicConnect. The original art lots will remain open for public bidding until the auction closes on October 4.
