Mission43 is hosting its annual 9/11 Miles of Remembrance event on Friday, September 11, at Ann Morrison Park in Boise. The inclusive 5K and community gathering honors the lives lost in the 2001 terrorist attacks and recognizes those impacted by the Global War on Terror.
This year’s event coincides with the 25th anniversary of September 11, the 10th anniversary of Mission43, and the 250th anniversary of the United States. Dan McGurkin, director of Mission43, noted that the shared milestones offer an opportunity to honor those lost while ensuring the service and stories of military members are remembered.
The schedule begins at 5:00 p.m. with an opening ceremony, followed by a 5K route along the Boise River Greenbelt where attendees can run, walk, ruck, or handcycle. An evening gathering featuring food, refreshments, live music, and family activities will run until 8:00 p.m.
A new addition to the event is a Memory Wall, where participants can post written reflections, personal memories, or messages honoring those who served and loved ones lost. Attendees are invited to share where they were on September 11 or reflect on what military service means to them.
The gathering marks 10 years of operation for Mission43, which has expanded from around 200 members at its launch in 2016 to over 11,000 veterans, military personnel, and spouses across Idaho. The organization provides resources focused on education, employment, health, outdoor recreation, and community programming.
