Author Sharon O’Flaherty has released a new rhyming children’s picture book titled “Problems with Pooski.” The story is based on her family’s real-life experiences raising their first English Springer Spaniel nearly 30 years ago.
The narrative begins when a young boy finds a puppy named Pooski abandoned in a cardboard box and decides to bring her home. Pooski’s curiosity soon leads to household mishaps, including shredded homework and chewed shoes.
These behavior struggles force the family to consider whether they should keep the puppy or find her another home. Through this conflict, the book explores themes of patience, forgiveness, and collaborative problem-solving.
O’Flaherty originally wrote the story as a poem following her own family’s experience with their puppy. Years later, after her children grew up and started their own families, she revisited the writing for her grandchildren and decided to share it with a wider audience.
Targeted at children between the ages of 3 and 8, the book is designed for families, educators, librarians, and animal lovers. O’Flaherty hopes the story will encourage discussions about responsibility, compassion, and looking past mistakes to find solutions.
