The Boston Children’s Museum has announced the upcoming launch of Sweet Ritual, a specialized art exhibition created by contemporary artist Soojin Kim. Scheduled to open on Saturday, June 27, the family-oriented gallery installation utilizes detailed renderings of common confections to prompt public reflection and curiosity. The complete collection of drawings and paintings will remain on display at the facility through September 7.
The featured artwork transforms recognizable American treats, including Oreos and M&Ms, into visual focal points designed to slow down the observational process of viewers. The pieces explore the intersection of personal memory and broader cultural shifts, drawing structural inspiration from the childhood experiences of the artist’s father in Korea. Senior art educator Sage Brousseau noted that the detailed depictions function as symbols for relatable human connections beneath their colorful aesthetics.
The gallery space incorporates a hands-on activity zone where visitors can actively investigate the neurological relationship between human olfactory senses and memory recall. Kim will also host an in-person public meet and greet session on the opening Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., which includes a dedicated children’s storytime segment. The broader museum curriculum focuses on developmental skill building through experiential learning installations.
Kim originally relocated from South Korea to Boston in 2000 to complete a master’s degree in electrical engineering before redirecting her career toward the fine arts. She subsequently completed a master of fine arts degree in studio art from Tufts University in 2017 and secured several industry honors, including the Boit Award and the Dana Pond Award. The artist currently resides in Connecticut and balances her independent studio practice with instructional teaching roles in Boston.
The facility maintains operational hours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Monday, remaining closed to the public on Tuesdays. Standard general admission pricing is set at 24 dollars for adults, seniors, and youth ages 1 to 15, while infants under 12 months and museum members receive complimentary entry. Museum administrators recommend securing advanced digital reservations for high-volume periods, including weekends and specialized discount afternoons.
